While nearly all of American Samoa’s current electricity supply is generated from fossil fuels, such as high sulfur content diesel fuel, this traditional energy sources faces a number of challenges including rising prices, national security concerns over dependence on imports from a limited number of countries which have significant fossil fuel supplies, and growing environmental concerns over the climate change risks associated with power generation using fossil fuels.
AdvantagesWelcome to PSI - Energy Solutions. Renewable energy sources such as solar, biomass, hydroelectric and wind power generation have emerged as the most potential alternatives which address many of these concerns. As opposed to fossil fuels which draw on finite resources that may eventually become too expensive to retrieve, renewable energy sources are generally unlimited in availability.
Reduced Dependence on Fossil Fuels. - Solar energy produced with photovoltaic systems does not require fossil fuels and is therefore less dependent on this limited and expensive natural resource. Although the amount and timing of sunlight over the day varies throughout the day, season, and year, a properly designed and sized system can be highly reliable while providing long-term, fixed price electricity supply.
Matching Peak Time Output with Peak Time Demand. - Solar energy can be an effective supplement of electricity supply from the electrical transmission grid, such as when electricity demand peaks in the summer or during the day when residential and commercial demand is the highest due to the extensive use of air conditioning systems.

Biomass is any organic matter—wood, coconuts, seaweed, palm tree leaves, animal wastes, un-used tuna waste—that can be used as an energy source. Biomass is probably our oldest source of energy after the sun. For thousands of years, people have burned wood to heat their homes and cook their food.
Biomass gets its energy from the sun like all organic matter, which contains stored energy from the sun. During a process called photosynthesis, sunlight gives plants the energy they need to convert water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and sugars.
Biomass is a renewable energy source because its supplies are not limited. We can always grow trees and crops, and waste, unfortunately, will always exist.
Using BioMassIt's time to say Talofa to the future of Samoan Energy. Usually we burn wood and use its energy for heating. Burning, however, is not the only way to convert biomass energy into a usable energy source. There are four ways:
There are several types of processes that can produce an alcohol (ethanol) from various plants, especially corn. The two most commonly used processes involve using yeast to ferment the starch in the plant to produce ethanol. One of the newest processes involves using enzymes to break down the cellulose in the plant fibers, allowing more ethanol to be made from each plant, because all of the plant tissue is utilized, not just the starch.
We can burn biomass in waste-to-energy plants to produce steam for making electricity, or we can burn it to provide heat for industries and homes.
Bacteria feed on dead plants and animals, producing methane. Methane is produced whenever organic material decays. Methane is the main ingredient in natural gas, the gas sold by natural gas utilities. Many landfills are recovering and using the methane gas produced by the garbage. A process that can be placed in American Samoa and create immediate savings.
Biomass can be converted into gas or liquid fuels by using chemicals or heat. In India, cow manure is converted to methane gas to produce electricity. Methane gas can also be converted to methanol, a liquid form of methane.

Wind is one of the oldest sources of power used by man. Our ancient ancestors harnessed the power of wind to propel their canoes.
Wind Energy technologies use the kinetic energy in wind for practical purposes such as generating electricity, charging batteries, pumping water, and grinding grain.
Most wind energy technologies can be used as stand-alone applications, connected to a utility power grid, or even combined with a photovoltaic system, or battery storage system. For utility-scale sources of wind energy, a large number of turbines are usually built close together to form a wind farm that provides the grid power.
Stand-alone turbines are typically used for pumping water or communications. However, homeowners, farmers, and remote villages in windy areas can also use small wind systems to generate electricity.
turbine designTalofa to Alternative Power. Although all wind turbines operate on similar principles, several varieties are in use today. These include horizontal axis turbines and vertical axis turbines. Horizontal Axis Turbines.
Horizontal axis turbines are the most common turbine configuration used today. They consist of a tall tower, atop which sits a fan-like rotor that faces into or away from the wind, a generator, a controller, and other components. Most horizontal axis turbines built today are two- or three-bladed.
Horizontal axis turbines sit high atop towers to take advantage of the stronger and less turbulent wind at 100 feet (30 meters) or more aboveground. Each blade acts like an airplane wing, so when wind blows, a pocket of low-pressure air forms on the downwind side of the blade. The low-pressure air pocket then pulls the blade toward it, which causes the rotor to turn. This is called lift. The force of the lift is actually much stronger than the wind's force against the front side of the blade, which is called drag. The combination of lift and drag causes the rotor to spin like a propeller, and the turning shaft spins a generator to make electricity.

Hydropower is electricity generated by using the energy of moving water such as rivers and streams. Rain usually originating in hills and mountains create streams and rivers that eventually run into the ocean. The energy of moving water can be substantial, and is the primary reason it is Americas largest source of clean energy.
Hydro PowerOperating around the country for over a century, hydropower has helped make America the economic powerhouse it is today. Now, it can help transform the American Samoan economy through a readily available, reliable base supply of clean energy. This resource not only can provide a base power source to stabilize the grid, but is available around the clock and provide American Samoan Jobs, and energy not dependent upon fossil fuels.
Small hydro is a readily available technology that includes a wide range of projects spread across the United States. In fact, records from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission show that approximately 89% of our non-federal facilities have a capacity of less than 30 MW.
Small hydroelectricity projects can capture energy from low-head stream flows such as those available in American Samoa. By installing small turbines in irrigation canals, water-treatment plant outfalls and satellite water tank outputs means projects often have little to no environmental impact.
Pumped-Storage HydroelectrictyThe ability to stabilize an electrical network or grid is often challenging and costly. Pumped-storage hydroelectricity provides the ability to reliably stabilize an electrical network. This ability is becoming an increasingly important part of an effective and efficient means to provid grid stability to manage the balance between energy production and consumption. Pumped-storage hydroelectricity is the only economical and natural means of storing large amounts energy that can be retrieved on demand.
In American Samoa, a small scale pumped-storage hydro can be integrated into the existing infrastructures such as; Upper Fagatogo Water Reservoir, Fagatogo Water Reservoir, and Vaipito Reservoir. Additionally, Small pumped-storage hydropower plants can be built on streams and drinking water. Such plants can provide distributed energy storage and distributed flexible electricity production. This ability can provide decentralized integration of intermittent renewable energy technologies, such as wind power and photovoltaic.
AdvantagesHydropower is a fueled by water, so it's a clean fuel source. Hydropower doesn't pollute the air like power plants that burn fossil fuels, such as high sulfur diesel generators.
Hydropower is a domestic source of energy, that can be produced in American Samoa.
Hydropower relies on the water cycle, which is driven by the sun, thus it's a renewable power source.
Hydropower is generally available as needed; engineers can control the flow of water through the turbines to produce electricity on demand.
Hydropower is one of the cheapest ways to generate electricity today. That's because once the system has been installed, the energy source—flowing water—is free. It's a clean fuel source that is renewable yearly by rainfall.
The U.S. hydropower industry currently employs up to 300,000 workers, from project development to manufacturing to facilities operations and maintenance. Hydropower can not only provide skilled jobs in American Samoa, but can provide a job set that can be employed across the globe.
